You want to become an authority in your niche and position as the go-to expert, but if all you're doing is pouring all your knowledge in educational posts, we need to talk. That approach might have worked in 2010, but it’s 2024, and things have changed. Sure, being knowledgeable is important, but standing out as an expert? It’s about way more than just sharing tips and tricks.
What really matters is showing up as your authentic self, having the guts to share your opinions, and living the transformation you offer to others. That’s what sets you apart and turns you into the go-to expert your audience can’t stop talking about.
Authenticity is your superpower
We’ve all see those perfectly designed Instagram feeds and flawlessly curated content. But you know what people are actually craving? (it's not more "5 ways to do X" posts). They are craving realness. They want to connect with someone who isn’t just spitting out information but actually gets them, someone who understands where they are and can help them get to where they want to be.
So, here’s my advice for you ... Show up as you. Share your story, the ups and downs, the struggles and successes. Don’t be afraid to let your audience see the real you, because that’s what builds trust. And let’s face it, trust is the foundation of authority. When people feel like they know you, they’re way more likely to see you as the expert they need.
Don’t be afraid to be polarizing
We all know that trying to please everyone is a losing game. If you’re always playing it safe, you’re blending in, not standing out. And standing out is what gets you noticed as an authority.
Don’t shy away from sharing your strong opinions, even if they’re a little controversial. I’m not saying you should be divisive just for the sake of it, but if you’ve got a unique perspective, own it. Yes, some people might disagree with you, and that’s okay. The ones who resonate with your message? They’ll become your most loyal fans, and those are the people who will see you as the authority you truly are.
Be your own testimonial
Don’t just talk about the results you can achieve—live them. You want to be seen as an authority? Then be your own best testimonial.
Whatever you’re offering to your clients or audience, make sure you’re embodying it yourself. If you’re a health coach, show that you practice what you preach. If you’re a business coach, share how your methods have helped you grow your own business. When you’re the living proof of what’s possible, people don’t just have to take your word for it—they can see it for themselves.
Transformation > information
Educational content is important, but it’s not enough to make you an authority. Why? Because information alone doesn’t create change—transformation does. Your audience doesn’t need more facts and figures—they need someone who can guide them through a real transformation.
So, instead of just sharing tips, focus on how you can help people apply what you’re teaching to get actual results. Share success stories, case studies, and examples of real-life change. When people see that your work leads to tangible results, that’s when they start to see you as an authority.
